Un père mourant et son fils boivent leur dernier bol d'eau. Ils ont besoin d’huile pour les machines qui les maintiendront en vie et purifieront leur eau. Un camion passe avec un énorme baril de pétrole à l’arrière. Le fils le signale, pour découvrir que la personne qui conduit le camion est une créature monstrueuse de la nation avec laquelle ils sont en guerre.

Le président invite Jason à être son candidat à la vice-présidence et commence à le refaire. Ce processus marginalise M'dea et Chase. Dahlia et Jason sont attirés l'un par l'autre.
Le président menace M'dea de prison ou de perdre son fils si elle ne fait pas ce qu'il veut. Il la prévient de ne pas causer de problèmes à Jason.

Julia se souvient de l'amour qu'elle ressentait pour son fils Paul lorsqu'il était bébé.
Ray chante l'ambivalence que ses parents ressentaient à son égard lorsqu'il était enfant.
Une valse est interrompue. Ava révèle à quel point elle est tombée financièrement et combien il lui est difficile de prendre soin de son fils.
Paul is curious about why he and his mother don’t have a car, and Ava explains it’s because they’re poor. Paul again asks why that’s so, and Ava states it’s because his father has no luck. Paul announces that he is lucky.
L'oncle Oscar entre, ayant entendu le bruit, et demande à Paul ce qui se passe. Paul lui révèle son secret : le cheval à bascule est chanceux et lui murmure les noms de chevaux de course. Oscar appelle le gardien de Paul, Bassett, qui admet que Paul lui dit les noms des chevaux de course gagnants. Les trois se rendent aux courses pour le prouver.
Paul dit à Oscar qu'il espère que l'argent gagné empêchera la maison de chanter. Paul entend la maison chanter - « elle » chante qu'il manque toujours, que rien ne suffit. Il fait promettre à Oscar de ne pas dire à sa mère d'où provient l'argent; cela pourrait gâcher leur chance. Oscar lui dit de ne jamais arrêter de monter sur son cheval.
