SYNOPSIS
At 4 a.m., a composer stands looking out the window, his tools nearby. Across town, a librettist is doing the same. Both are just slightly panicking about their latest work: an opera about a dog named Harley. This work is a meditation on the personal doubt, collegial suspicion, and sudden inspiration that can keep artists awake until the wee hours.
MUSIC DESCRIPTION
This scene reveals two parallel sides of the same story, as a composer and librettist are both kept up at night worrying about their latest project. Both vocal parts contain lines that are sometimes speech-like, and sometimes dramatic—while rapid repeated figures in the piano give the scene an anxious, though lighthearted, energy.
