FAQ – For Users

PLEASE NOTE: This section is currently Under Construction

Creators:

  • How do I submit my work?
      • There is a step-by-step guide on how to submit your works HERE
  • What are the criteria for a work to be included in COR?
      • Any piece that has had one public production is eligible for submission. The production may be a full production, a concert, a semi-staged performance, but it must have had a premiere. Workshop presentations are not eligible.
  • What rights does COR have to my work?
      • The agreement you will sign with COR in order to sell your works here encompasses non-performance and non-revenue-generating applications. These will primarily be students looking for works for in-class presentations, auditions; and singers building up their own repertoire.
      • NO performances, recordings, broadcasts, or other uses of the work are permitted through COR. All requests for performance rights and royalties will be negotiated directly with the rightsholder or their agent.
  • Where can I find the Term of Service?
      • The Terms of Service is HERE
    • Will I earn revenues on score purchases through COR?
      • Yes! Creators will receive revenue payments on all piano-vocal score purchases. For more information, download our Contributor Agreement form HERE
  • Can I sell my own works through my own site/through an agent/on another sales platform, but still have an entry?
      • Yes, you may. If your sales platform agreement is non-exclusive, you may have works in both places. If you’d prefer to keep the sales on another site, you will have the option to add that to your entry when you submit the work to the database. PLEASE NOTE: Prices and ratios for piano-vocal scores sold through COR are pre-set and cannot be negotiated.
  • Can I have an entry without selling work at all?
      • Yes, you may. You are welcome to submit as an entry only, with no option to sell the work on this or any other site.
  • Can I include the full orchestral score?
      • No, we will only sell piano-vocal scores. Use of the full orchestral score must be negotiated directly following a request for purchase. Please do not include parts in your score submission.
  • What materials will COR accept?
      • We will accept: piano-vocal scores in pdf format (for the full work, specific scenes, and specific arias); photos, video, or audio recordings (provide links to the video and audio recordings); premiere production information; descriptive writing about the work, the process of creation, and any other information you’d like to include about the work.
  • What is the fee schedule for COR
      • The fee schedule is attached as part of the user agreement and can be found separately HERE.
      • Single copies of piano-vocal scores of scenes and arias can be purchased for $10
      • Single copies of piano-vocal scores of full operas can be purchased for $75
      • HST will be added upon provision of an HST number
  • Does COR take a cut?
      • Yes, COR keeps 25% of works that were not commissioned by Tapestry Opera. The remaining 75% is split ⅔ to composer, ⅓ to librettist.
  • What do I do if I collect HST?
      • Please fill out the section to provide your HST number in your contributor agreement, and upload it in the submission page.
  • How do I get paid?
      • Payments are issued through an online wire transfer to the email associated with your account. If you need to change your account email address, or you would like your funds directed to a different account, please contact info@canadianoperaresource.com
  • How often do I get paid?
      • Payments are conducted on a twice-yearly basis
  • Do I still hold the copyright to my own work?
      • Yes; you are not giving up any ownership of your work.
    • How do I request an edit or addition to an entry on COR?
      • You can get in touch with us here.
    • How do I request an entry be removed from COR?
      • You can get in touch with us here, and the entry will be removed within 60 days.
  • What happens if someone uses my work for purposes outside of COR’s permissions? Eg. What if I hear about a public performance I didn’t give permission for?
    • If you are made aware of a performance, recording, or broadcast of your work to you did not give permission for, please contact us at info@canadianoperaresource.com
    • If it’s the first time a user has performed, recorded, or broadcast without permission, we will convene the creators or their agents and the user, to negotiate royalties after the fact, and reiterate the rules of COR purchases
    • The second time a user operates outside of the permissions granted by their user agreement, their account will be suspended for 30 days. We convene the creators of their agents and the user to negotiate royalties after the fact and reiterate the rules of COR purchases. The user will be put on notice that another infraction will result in the termination of their account.
    • If they are found to have operated outside the permissions more than twice, their account will be terminated permanently and they will no longer be able to purchase scores through COR.

Users:

  • Do I have to have an account to use the site?
      • You can browse the site without an account, but you must have an account to purchase scores
  • How much does an account cost?
      • Accounts are free for individuals. If you are a student at an institution with a membership, you may be able to purchase scores under their membership at no cost to you directly.
  • How do I know if my school has an account?
      • You should ask the librarian at your institution if there is a membership you can access. If so you will need your school email address (eg: student (at) ryerson (dot) edu) to access it.
    • What Can I Search For?
      • You can search for composer or librettist names, themes (eg. LGBTQ+, family relationships, etc), by voice type (eg. arias for baritones), or any word that appears in an entry. Can’t remember the name of that show, but you know a singer who was in it? Search by their name! Not sure quite what you’re looking for, but you know you want a woman composer or librettist? Search “woman creator”, “woman composer”, or “woman librettist”. Know that you like the kind of work created by a specific company? Search their name, and get a list of everything they’ve commissioned. Or, just try typing any random word and see what comes up!
    • Will I be able to purchase scores directly from COR?
      • You will be able to purchase digital copies of piano-vocal scores for operas, scenes, and arias that have been made available by the creators directly from COR.
  • What am I allowed to do with a score I’ve purchased?
      • You are allowed to use this score for in-class assignments or presentations; auditions; and to increase your repertoire. You may not use it for public performances, broadcasts, recordings, or anything that has a public audience or generates revenue.
  • I would like to perform/record/broadcast a score I purchased here. How do I get permission to do that?
      • Performance permissions, royalties, and other fees must be negotiated directly with the rights-holders for the work. Please check the entry for the piece you’d like to perform or record, and the contact information for the rights-holders will be in the Scores to Purchase section.
  • These are all piano-vocal scores. How do I get the full orchestral score?
      • Use of the orchestral score must be negotiated with the rights-holders or their agents directly. Please check the entry for the piece you’d like to perform or record, and the contact information for the rights-holders will be in the Scores to Purchase section.
    • Am I able to acquire performance rights through COR?
      • COR does not negotiate performance rights. Please see the entry for the piece you wish to perform for information on who to contact for the rights.
  • I see a typo/mistake/problem/missing information with an entry on the site. Who do I contact about that?
