SYNOPSIS
In December of 1946, Addie is thrilled to win the class Christmas tree in a contest, but is disappointed when her father, James, refuses to allow it in their home. Despite Addie's grandmother's appeals, James remains adamant, his grief at the death of Addie's mother 10 years ago having twisted into bitterness.
With nowhere to put the tree, Addie gives it to her classmate Gloria, whose family cannot afford a tree of their own. Touched by Addie's generosity, James finally relents and brings home a tree and some decorations. He even brings down a star topper down from the attic, which he reveals was crafted by Addie's mother especially for Addie's first Christmas.

CREATION
DEVELOPMENT
In its program to enhance holiday offerings, the Houston Grand Opera approached Gordon with the idea of creating an operatic version of the enchanting TV-movie-turned-novel, The House Without a Christmas Tree. The central story of personal loss struck a chord with both Gordon and librettist Vavrek, as each has suffered the loss of family members and, in Gordon’s case, partner. The final theme of rebirth is one of catharsis and joy, and the resulting opera was especially welcome in a city that had just experienced the devastation of Hurricane Harvey.
