Benjamin Pesetsky is a composer and writer. His music has been performed by the Albany Symphony Orchestra, the American Symphony Orchestra, New England Conservatory’s Jordan Winds, Tapestry Opera in Toronto, WordSong and the Shakespeare Concerts in Boston, and Guerrilla Composers Guild and the Phonochrome Collective in San Francisco. Current projects include a new song cycle for soprano Sara LeMesh and pianist Allegra Chapman, as well as a solo work for violinist/violist Luosha Fang.

NOW Magazine called his opera scene Love Redux “one of the best episodes” on a program of new works staged by Tapestry Opera, and his Piano Sonata was commissioned by Thomas Hecht and premiered in Europe, Asia, and the United States. He has been an artist in residence at the Banff Centre and the Hambidge Center and attended the Deer Valley Festival and the Vancouver International Song Institute.

As a writer, his program notes have appeared with the St. Louis Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Tippet Rise Art Center, Bard Music Festival, and the Hudson Valley Chamber Music Circle, while articles and criticism have appeared in Playbill, Early Music America, Boston.com, and Classical Voice North America. He previously served on the staff of the Handel and Haydn Society in Boston and has worked as an editor and consultant to the St. Louis Symphony, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Handel and Haydn, and Bard Music West.

Pesetsky earned degrees in composition and philosophy from Bard College Conservatory and Bard College, and his teachers included Joan Tower, George Tsontakis, John Halle, and Howard Frazin. He now lives in Somerville, Massachusetts.
