SYNOPSIS
As Naila prepares to leave her home, she must abandon her girlhood identity, pretending to be a boy, hoping that the subterfuge will provide some measure of safety. The only thing Lolo can give his departing friend is his name: “When they ask you your name, tell them it’s Lolo.” He accepts her bequest of childhood valuables and the care of her rabbit, and Naila becomes “Lolo” for the road to Pakistan.

QUOTATIONS FROM CREATIVE TEAM
The way Anusree Roy drew these two young kids, Naila and Lolo, trying to handle events so much larger than their childhood world, sustaining massive impacts on their friendship, spoke to me deeply. Her vision drew me back to writing on geopolitical conflict, which I had been avoiding after spending the previous several years working on my opera adaptation of Reading Lolita in Tehran, set during the Iranian Revolution.
Years after writing this scene I’m still moved by Lolo’s gift. Their wordless acapella duet that finishes the scene haunts me with the question if one day they can meet again as promised. And who knows? Maybe decades later they find each other in Canada.
