SYNOPSIS
Based on the real-life experiences of US Marine Christian Ellis, Fallujah follows the story of fictional USMC Lance Corporal Philip Houston. After a failed suicide attempt, Philip experiences flashbacks to the horrors of the Iraq war while waiting out a 72-hour holding period in a veterans hospital. One moment he remembers a friend and fellow soldier suddenly cut down by sniper fire; the next he sees an Iraqi boy and his mother flee their ancestral home to escape the violence.

CREATION
DEVELOPMENT
Fallujah is inspired by the life and work of US Marine Christian Ellis, a machine gunner in the Iraq War. Ellis's platoon was ambushed and bombed in the 2004 battle of Falljuah, killing many in his troop and leaving him with a broken back. He returned home to join millions of American soldiers struggling to piece their lives together while suffering from severe post-traumatic stress. After four suicide attempts and with the help of Heather Raffo, an acclaimed New York librettist of Iraqi descent, Tobin Stokes, an accomplished composer, City Opera Vancouver, Long Beach Opera, and explore founder Charlie Annenberg, Christian helped turn the demons of war into an inspiring, mind-opening, and moving work of art.
